Honest questions about Jesus, asked in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville has prominent churches and quiet acts of mercy most visitors never see. Jesus did not call people to admire Him from a seat. He called disciples to take up the cross daily, love enemies, forgive, welcome strangers, and make more disciples. His resurrection means this hard life is hopeful, not grim.

Faith came up the St. Johns early

On 29 June 1564, René de Laudonnière sailed into the mouth of the St. Johns River with more than 300 men and began building a fort the next day. Many were French Protestants, Huguenots, hoping for a way out of Catholic-ruled France. Spain saw a Protestant colony on land it claimed as a threat. On 20 September 1565 Spanish troops under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés took the fort and killed most of the settlers there. Fort Caroline National Memorial, at 12713 Fort Caroline Road, is free and open daily from 9 to 5.

In July 1838 the Rev. James McDonald gathered what became Jacksonville's oldest Baptist congregation. It began with Black and white members, enslaved people and the people who held them, sitting in the same church. By 1859 there were about 250 Black members and 40 white ones. Today it is Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, in a building that dates to 1904, and in 2023 it joined the African American Civil Rights Network.

In the 1880s Clara White fed hungry neighbors on Clay Street. Her daughter, Eartha M. M. White, kept going. She formally founded the mission in 1904, and during the Depression she moved it into a former theater on West Ashley Street that still carries her mother's name.

Meals, shelter and a phone that answers at night

The Sulzbacher Center at 611 E. Adams Street downtown serves free meals at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. to anyone who is hungry. It opened in 1995 and, by its own description, runs shelter, a family health center and case management as well as the dining room.

In LaVilla, the Clara White Mission at 613 W. Ashley Street serves more than 400 meals a day and trains people for kitchen and construction jobs. Its story starts further down this page.

For drinking, Northeast Florida Intergroup Services answers a 24-hour line at 904-399-8535. The office is at 3128 Beach Boulevard, and the same site lists local AA meetings.

Getting there matters as much as the address. JTA runs four First Coast Flyer bus rapid transit lines, Green, Orange, Blue and Red, through downtown. If someone in your group rides the bus, a host near a Flyer stop may be the difference between coming once and coming every week.

Booking a library room

Jacksonville Public Library study rooms hold four people or fewer. You need a current library card, you can book up to two weeks ahead, and a room may be released if you are 15 minutes late.
