How to become a Christian in Madison: the Acts 2 way.

When a crowd in Jerusalem asked "what shall we do?", Peter gave a four-part answer that still stands: believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; repent; be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:36-38). You can do all of that in Madison this week. No class, no membership, no cost.

What Peter actually said

The first time anyone ever asked "how do I become a Christian?" was about fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead, in Acts chapter 2. Peter had just told a Jerusalem crowd that Jesus, the man they crucified, is both Lord and Christ. The text says they were "cut to the heart" and asked what to do. Here's the answer, straight from the source:

"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
Acts 2:38

Believe

That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. That's how Peter confessed Him (Matthew 16:16) and how John said we come to life in His name (John 20:31). This is a settled conviction about who Jesus is, not a vague spiritual feeling.

Repent

Turn around. Repentance means changing direction, away from your old life and toward God. It is deeper than feeling bad about yourself, and you can make that decision anywhere in Madison.

Be baptized

Full immersion in water, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins. In the Bible people were baptized the same day they believed, with no waiting period or committee (Acts 8:36-38). Any believer can baptize you.

Receive the Holy Spirit

"The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off" (Acts 2:39). God doesn't leave you to figure the rest out alone.

Following Jesus in Madison

South Madison, the Northside, East Isthmus, Schenk-Atwood, Near West, and Allied-Dunn's Marsh have different transportation, housing, and daily rhythms. UW calendars and state-government schedules shape part of the city, but not all of it. Meet near the people involved and learn the neighborhood from residents.

Madison's lakes and isthmus make a beautiful map, but they can make a poor weekly plan. A Northside resident should not have to cross Downtown for every conversation, and a service worker or graduate-student parent may need a breakfast table instead of another evening event. Choose a place close to the people coming.

Jesus Saves Cities is a Christian resource, not a Madison church branch. Madison is a new growth area. Local followers of Jesus can begin their own small table, read Scripture, share food, help with baptism, and serve neighbors without collecting money.

Madison holds students, state workers, long-time families, recent arrivals, skeptics, and people carrying church hurt. Begin with Jesus and leave room for the hard question. Scripture settles what it settles; where it does not, we should say so plainly.

Responding to Jesus in Madison

Read Acts 2:22-41 with enough time to follow Peter's whole argument. He speaks about Jesus' public life, crucifixion, resurrection, exaltation, and identity as Lord and Christ before the crowd asks what to do. Their response is not vague spirituality. Peter tells them to repent and be baptized for forgiveness, with the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Repentance may challenge the habits Madison rewards as easily as the ones it criticizes. Intellectual confidence can become pride. Public concern can become contempt for an actual neighbor. Busyness can make family, prayer, and mercy wait indefinitely. Ask where Jesus' teaching contradicts the life you are building, then turn with practical help from other believers.

Cold weather changes baptism planning, not the meaning of baptism. A private indoor pool or suitable tub can offer stable conditions. Goodman Pool must approve the exact use, and lake baptism should never be improvised around a beach opening. Bacteria, algae, wind, temperature, depth, and seasonal staffing all matter. After baptism, build a life that continues: Scripture, prayer, shared meals, forgiveness, direct care, and patient witness. A first act of obedience should lead into many more.

Build a life that can survive February

After baptism, choose relationships that will still exist when the excitement fades and the sidewalks ice over. Read Matthew with a few people, then John. Share meals, pray for specific names, confess sin without performance, and help one neighbor each week. An online group can support the week, but look for safe local friendships that can bring soup, offer a ride, or sit in the same room when life hurts.

If university or legislative calendars dominate your schedule, protect a repeatable time rather than waiting for an open season that never comes. Following Jesus includes study, but it also includes forgiveness, service, courage, truth, and love for enemies. Put the next act of obedience on the calendar.

Where to get baptized in Madison

Madison's lakes require restraint. Beach closures, blue-green algae, weather, cold water, and seasonal supervision can change the answer on the same day. Do not name a beach as ready for baptism until the city grants permission and current conditions are safe. Goodman Pool also requires explicit ceremony approval. A private pool or suitable tub is usually more controllable, especially in winter.

A tub can allow careful full immersion in cold weather. Use nonslip footing and have another adult help.

Becoming a Christian: honest questions

How do I become a Christian?

Believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; repent; be baptized for forgiveness; and receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:36-38).

Does a sinner's prayer save me?

No. Jesus never gave a conversion prayer, and Peter told convicted hearers to repent and be baptized.

Can I be baptized in a Madison lake?

Only after explicit permission and a same-day safety check. Controlled water is often safer.

Who can baptize me?

Any follower of Jesus can help baptize. A clergy title, payment, stage, or religious building is unnecessary.
