Choose a table, not a platform

Washington can make every conversation feel political. A small gathering around Jesus does not need a microphone, a campaign, or access to important people. Ask where the people actually live and when their workday ends. Someone in Deanwood should not be expected to cross the whole city every week because a downtown address looked central. A home table in Petworth, a lunch-hour conversation near a federal workplace, and a Google Meet for a person on a late shift can each make sense.

DC Public Library offers meeting and study rooms free to people with a valid library card. Rooms require reservations. Meeting rooms can be requested up to 60 days ahead, are reviewed within 48 hours, and may be reserved three times in a 30-day period for up to three hours. They must be free and open to the public. Study rooms may be booked twice per day for up to three hours and are available to cardholders age 13 or older. Deanwood, Northwest One, Rosedale, and Parklands-Turner currently have no meeting or study rooms. Takoma Park has no study rooms. Read the current room guide and check the chosen branch before inviting anyone.

A private conversation belongs in a study room or a home, subject to the room rules. A public Bible conversation in a meeting room cannot be closed to strangers. Food needs prior authorization. The library provides space under a public policy; it does not sponsor the gathering.

Begin with Mark 10:35-45. Two disciples ask Jesus for seats of power. Jesus answers by describing leadership as service and points toward His own life given for others. Ask where status quietly controls the people at the table. Let an intern, contractor, custodian, attorney, student, or retiree answer without ranking the voices.

Before the next meeting, carry one burden without taking a photograph. Help a returning citizen practice for an interview. Sit with a neighbor at a benefits appointment. Bring a meal after a night shift. Help a newly arrived family understand one transit trip or school message. Keep the promise small enough to keep. Then come back and ask what you learned about the way Jesus leads.
