A call to apprenticeship
In Mark 1:16-20, fishermen left their nets to go with Jesus. Following involved proximity, learning, and participation in His work. Modern disciples cannot walk the roads of Galilee beside Him, but they can hear His words in the Gospel accounts and put them into practice.
Jesus made the cost plain. A disciple takes up the cross daily (Luke 9:23). Comfort, reputation, possessions, and even family approval cannot become a higher loyalty. This is demanding. It is also life with the One Peter called the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Love identifies the disciple
Jesus told His followers to love one another as He loved them (John 13:34-35). Following therefore reaches kitchens, workplaces, conflicts, hospital rooms, and lonely tables. It includes forgiveness, truth, courage, welcome, and returning when care becomes inconvenient.
Begin with Matthew. Mark one command that presses on your life and act on it. Ask another believer to practice it with you. Keep the resurrection in view; disciples follow a living Lord.
